Imam al-Ṣaffārīnī on the Definition of Ahl al-Sunna and His Creedal Methodology: A Refutation of Salafi Contentions

Contemporary Salafism has sought to suggest, on the basis of a single passage extracted from Imam al-Ṣaffārīnī’s (d. 1188 AH) Lawāmiʿ al-Anwār al-Bahiyya wa-Sawāṭiʿ al-Asrār al-Athariyya, that this eminent Ḥanbalī Atharī theologian negated the Ashʿarīs and Māturīdīs from Ahl al-Sunna wa-l-Jamāʿa. This study subjects that claim to rigorous textual scrutiny, drawing on al-Ṣaffārīnī’s complete corpus with full Arabic texts and English translations throughout to establish his considered and unambiguous position.

The study opens with a biographical account of al-Ṣaffārīnī drawn from the testimony of his own disciple, Shaykh Muḥammad Kamāl al-Dīn al-Ghazzī al-ʿĀmirī, before proceeding to the contested passage itself and its resolution through four interlocking lines of evidence: his explicit classification of Ahl al-Sunna into the Atharīs, Ashʿarīs, and Māturīdīs at the outset of his principal creedal work; the discovery, in the commentary of the later Ḥanbalī scholar Ibn al-Shaṭṭī on the ʿAqīda al-Ṣaffārīniyya, of al-Ṣaffārīnī’s own personal annotations [taʿlīqāt] recorded in the margin of a manuscript in the hand of Shaykh ʿAbdullāh Khalaf al-Daḥyān in which the resolution of the apparent tension is laid out in full:

A Beneficial Note: The author (meaning al-Ṣaffārīnī) — may Allah have mercy on him — mentioned in some of his annotations [taʿlīqāt] the following wording: he cited regarding the creeds [al-ʿaqāʾid] with the words “the creedal beliefs of the Saved Sect [al-firqa al-nājiya],” and said: “They are the Ashʿarīs, the Māturīdīs, and the People of Ḥadīth [Ahl al-Ḥadīth].”

Some of the scholars said: the Saved Sect [al-firqa al-nājiya] are the People of Ḥadīth, meaning the Atharīs, the Ashʿarīs, and the Māturīdīs.

If you were to say: the wording of the ḥadīth requires that salvation not be extended beyond one group, since it states: “My community will split into seventy-odd sects, all of them in the Fire except one sect, namely those who are upon what I and my Companions are upon” — the response is: the three factions are one single sect, because all of them are People of Ḥadīth [Ahl al-Ḥadīth]. For the Ashʿarīs and the Māturīdīs did not reject the ḥadīths nor did they neglect them; rather they either delegated them [fawwaḍūhā] or interpreted them [awwalūhā], and each of them is from the People of Ḥadīth.

The three are therefore one single sect by virtue of their following of the transmitted reports [akhbār] and their transmission of the narrated texts [āthār].

This is in contrast to the remaining sects, who subjected matters to the arbitration of rational opinion and contradicted what has been transmitted [al-manqūl] — they are therefore the people of innovation, misguidance, contravention, and ignorance. And Allah the Exalted knows best. End quote.

Several further lines of documentary evidence are then adduced, addressing al-Ṣaffārīnī’s defence of the Science of kalām theology [ʿIlm al-Kalām]; his own deployment of kalām terminology — negating substance [jawhar], accident [ʿaraḍ], and body [jism] for Allah — expressions the Salafi sect explicitly repudiates; his endorsement of delegation of meaning [Tafwīḍ al-Maʿnā] as the authentic methodology of the Salaf; his classification of istiwāʾ among the ambiguous [mutashābih] rather than unambiguous [muḥkam] verses; his unqualified citation of Māturīdī and Ashʿarī authorities such as Kamāl ibn al-Humām and al-Ghazālī; his practice of seeking a means of approach [tawassul] through the Prophet ﷺ, his family, and his Companions; ; his association with the Khalwatī and Qādirī Sufi paths; his discipleship under the Ḥanafī-Sufi master ʿAbd al-Ghanī al-Nābulusī; his transmission, with fully connected chains [asānīd], of the Ashʿarī-Sufi textual heritage, including al-Ghazālī’s Iḥyāʾ ʿUlūm al-Dīn, al-Qushayrī’s Risāla, and al-Būṣīrī’s Burda; and a previously unpublished manuscript fatwa, jointly authored with Imam Ibn Fayrūz, condemning the followers of Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb as Khārijites and their founder as “the renewer of the religion of Iblīs.”

The study concludes that al-Ṣaffārīnī belonged, in the fullest and most demonstrable sense, to the classical Sunni mainstream — Ḥanbalī in legal school, Atharī in creed as he himself defined that term, Sufi in spiritual formation, and genuinely inclusive in his definition of Ahl al-Sunna wa-l-Jamāʿa. The contemporary Salafi misappropriation of his legacy is thereby demonstrated to be not merely selective, but textually and historically indefensible.
